7: “I almost lost you” (RIZZLES DRABBLE)
“Thanks for letting me use that.” Jane nodded her head toward Maura’s office bathroom. Fresh out the shower she sat drying her wild hair.
“That’s fine.” Maura responded coldly without looking up from the laptop in front of her.
“I could’ve used the one in the gym but this was more private.”
“Mmhm.”
Placing her feet on the table in front of her, Jane sat back and observed Maura. She was sitting upright, which was nothing unusual for Maura, she typed fast and with a purpose. The look on her face was hard and cold. Maura Isles was never one for conversation without making eye contact.
“Y’know,” Jane cleared her throat “It wasn’t like last time.” Her voice was soft. “I’m okay.”
“I can see that.” Maura had stopped typing but she didn’t dare break her eyes away from the screen.
“Please stop giving me the cold shoulder, Maura.” Jane pleaded. “I haven’t done anything wrong.”
Maura scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Of course not, in the eyes of Jane Rizzoli you’ve done absolutely nothing wrong.” Maura slammed her laptop shut and ran her hands through her hair.
“I wasn’t in danger, Maura.”
“How could you have possibly known that?” Maura stood up and her eyes met Jane’s for the first time. “You stupidly chased a suspect who had weapons on him.”
“He had a knife, Maura. He wasn’t strapped head to toe with explosions!” Unlike last time. They both thought. The suspect had previously gone to jail because he had held up a bank with active explosions taped to his body.
“You weren’t to know that, Jane! You chased him and you jumped,” Maura was angry. “You jumped off that god forsaken bridge chasing him into the water.”
“It wasn’t a big bridge, Maura.” Jane stood up. “You’re making this out to be bigger than what it actually is. I jumped off a little bridge into a relatively small lake.”
“Oh you are unbelievable!” Maura shook her head. “Do you even care about other people?! Yourself?!” Walking over, Maura stood in front of Jane. “Perhaps you should have stayed in DC.” She was hurt.
“Don’t…” Jane reached out for her girlfriends hand. “You know I’m working on this with Terry.” And she had been; Coming back to Boston and accepting the role as Sergeant of Homicide, there was a request from both Korsak and Angela that the reckless Detective would participate in fortnightly counselling sessions with a counsellor outside the BPD.
“I thought…” Tears welled in Maura’s eyes. “I almost lost you…again.” Maura allowed a tear to be brushed aside by Jane’s thumb. “Do you know what it’s like being able to watch you do the things you do?”
“I’m sorry.” Jane didn’t know Maura was in the room with Nina watching every move being made by the Detective. It was both a blessing and a curse that Nina had hacked into the suspects home security system.
“I know.” Maura nodded and stepped into Jane’s embrace. Her girlfriend’s apology was sincere. “It’s just…I just got you back.”
“I’m going anywhere, Maur.” Running her hands up Maura’s back. “We’ve just started this. We’ve just discovered us. I’m not going anywhere.”
